Sekolah Gunung Merapi

Sekolah Gunung Merapi is a free and independent community learning centre serving vulnerable communities living on Indonesia’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi.

Our goals

Empowerment through education

We provide a range of free educational services aimed to empower the local community and conserve local wisdoms and culture.

Building a sustainable future

We strive to promote environmental and social sustainability through research into sustainable technologies and solutions, and environmental education.

Disaster recovery and mitigation

We are a hub for information, resources and skills that can assist in reconstruction and recovery, and mitigate any future volcanic and environmental disaster-risks.

Testimonials

  • The school also houses a library … it serves as a hub for students to read books, plays games and hang out after their normal school hours, instead of wandering in the streets or idling at home. It is also a place for them to meet guests and volunteers from other countries. In this way, they can build and boost their confidence in communicating with foreigners and widen their horizons.

  • “Since I was a kid, I was happy to invite students to play football and other games, and it was the most effective approach to their age, inviting them to play. Laughing and playing are the most amazing things in the world. It’s a memorable experience, with Mbak Yasmin and Mas Fajar teach me the simple meaning, the fight, the sincere, the togetherness, and the true meaning of happiness. “

    Retno Manggaharti, Volunteer Mar-Sep 2016

  •

The most inspiring experience for me was to see how enthusiastic the students were about learning and obtaining knowledge. The students were always interested, curious and happy as they learned. Their levels of English may vary but their goal remains the same – to improve their English language skills.

  • Every person is a teacher, everything gives knowledge, the universe is my school.
